MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR MICHAEL PARISI
This years Dream Inc promises to be an amazing event. As there are only 200 places, the opportunity for one-on-one feedback and for higher learning is going to give our students the chance to shine and to really get noticed by our industry guests. I'm looking forward to meeting every single person at the event and to help them with their craft. To have the likes of Marcia Hines and Michael Gudinski coupled with the brilliance of new shining stars Sneaky Sound System and Dan Sultan there is only going to add to the experience. This event will eclipse last year's workshops. I can't wait!
Here are 5 things I look for in an artist:
1. Uniqueness
It's important to create your own sound and style and not follow. I normally gravitate to artists and singers who challenge the norm.
2. Vocals
Again, I like artists who stretch themselves and who try and bring something fresh to their vocal style. Try not to copy. Try to innovate!
3. Attitude
It's all good and well to be able to sing but you need to have the right attitude if you want a career in music. You need to work hard, be prepared to fail and be equally prepared to be persistent. I like artists who are eager to listen and learn.
4. Song writing
Artists who can write their own songs have an instant edge over their peers. I'm a fan of powerful lyrics and great melodies. You may think you can't write but I believe if you can sing, you can write. It's about trying and digging deep. A great song is what makes a great artist.
5. Playing Live
Stage-craft and being able to perform are crucial in any artists career. If you're learning to sing or play an instrument, you should be simultaneously learning how to play and perform live. Your credibility as an artist rests with your ability to stand up in front of a crowd and perform.
Look forward to seeing you at the Workshops in August

FIND OUT A LITTLE MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST ARITST MENTOR DAN SULTAN
Dan Sultan continues to shine as the music industry takes a keen interest in the progress of this man and his band.
With a star that’s been swiftly rising since the release of the second and highly acclaimed album “Get out while you can” the band’s powerhouse performances are reputed to be amongst the most talked about shows in the country.
With a voice that is simultaneously sweet and rough, front man Dan Sultan knows how to turn on a crowd. The musical partnership and great synergy between Scott Wilson and Dan Sultan is as visible on stage as it is on this breakthrough album. From haunting acoustic ballads to big band soul rock guaranteed to make you move.
Get out while you can is an electrifying romp through rockabilly, blues, soul, country and swing and on the back of its release last November, was Triple J’s album of the week, shooting to Number 1 on the Independent Australian album charts. It remains one of the highest selling independent releases in the country today

STUDENT PROFILE... JESSIE MODRA
So Jessie thanks for talking with us. You attended last year's Dream Inc workshops, can you tell us about some of the highlights for you?
A: Last year's Dream Inc was fantastic! I got a chance to meet and sing for Katie Noonan, which was so exciting and get song advice from one of the girls from Dash and Will. The chance to sing for some record labels was such a great opportunity… and honestly, Dream Inc is one of the most positive and most exciting experiences I've had!
Were there any speakers at the event that really amazed you?
A: Yes, Katie Noonan was fantastic; I'm a big fan of hers. Brooke Fraser was another who astounded me, they were both so down to earth and they had such great advice that I took on board and have used since Dream Inc.
We're thrilled to hear that you have already registered to attend the workshops this year. What was the main attraction for you?
A: I would have to say the thing that excited me the most was the song writing workshops and a chance to sing for record labels. What a great opportunity for young musicians, I knew I had to grab at the chance then and there!
Tell us about your experiences with the end of day performances, and how do you cope with the pressure of performing in front of your friends and peers?
A: Last year I was very nervous about getting up and singing in front of everyone, the standard of singing is phenomenal! Everyone is so gifted and sometimes it can be a little nerve wracking getting up there after a bunch of great singers, but at the end of the day, I just reassured myself that everyone was having a go and we were all in the same boat! Everyone at Dream Inc was really supportive and encouraging.
Can you tell us a little more about yourself? What age did you start singing, performing and song writing?
A: I started singing when I was 7 years old. I've been involved in music for almost 9 years now and loved every second of it! I didn't start performing on stage and in front of an audience until I came to Jaanz School of Singing in 2005. It was the best move for me, I have gained so much from Jaanz. After a long time of singing pop songs and ballads, I found that it wasn't for me and found my niche in Jazz music. I’ve enjoyed singing at Jazz lounges, and surprising people with different styles of music in competitions. In 2008 I was lucky enough to win Teen Idol. I couldn't have done it without the support of my singing coach David. I started song writing early 2009, I'm learning to play guitar and I love it so much! It's my own unique way of expressing myself.
What are your biggest strengths as an artist?
A: I'd have to say my uniqueness. I think I'm different from others in the style of music I choose to perform. I'm not a loud, strong ballad singer, but somehow what I do, works for me. I think as long as you touch the audience somehow, move into their hearts and spirits, it doesn't matter if you can’t reach all the vocal ranges.
And finally, presumably you're always learning to be better at what you do. Do you have any tips for other Dream Inc students on how to stay motivated?
A: It can be tough to stay motivated in a world where negativity is sometimes the main focus. But music is an escape, a haven. I think to become a better musician you have to find what works for you, 'your river' as my teacher David Jaanz says. You can practice scales every single day, but if you don't zone and believe in what you’re singing, you won’t feel connected to it.
Believe in yourself and your music, because everyone is unique and unusual in their own way, don't put yourself down because you're different. Learn to accept yourself, and be positive and you can go anywhere you want to go!

CHECK OUT WHAT EMMA BROADY ONE OF OUR TEACHERS FOR 2009 amp;amp; 2010 DREAM INC HAS TO SAY...
Emma Broady is a Drama and Theatre Studies teacher, and is a longstanding Senior Teacher of Emotion Centred Singing. She has trained at undergraduate and postgraduate level at Deakin and Melbourne Universities, respectively, and was the recipient of the Melbourne University Dean's Honours Award. Whilst studying at Melbourne, Emma trained under the expertise of guest lecturers from The Royal Shakespeare Company; respected Drama Educator, researcher and writer, Professor John O'Toole; and Jane Bird: author of VCE text book 'Acting Smart' and co-writer of VCE Drama and Theatre Studies Study designs. Emma is currently leading all Drama classes at Scotch College Junior School, Melbourne, and works closely with David Jaanz at the David Jaanz School of Singing: “Teacher-of-the-Year” 2005 and 2008.
So Emma, tell us what are some of the highlights of Dream Inc for you as a teacher?
Working with such a diverse group of students from all over Australia. Leading the Drama for Singers workshop, and being a part of students new to Drama, coming out of their shell. Also, helping experienced performers create performance, and apply this to their singing. Morning warm-up sessions are great, as I love showing students how to care for their voice, and get the most out of the weekend.
Why would you recommend your students to attend Dream Inc?
Motivation- The vibe at Dream Inc. is contagious. There is something unexplainable about the benefits of spending the weekend with other aspiring singers, songwriters and performers. The variety- you wouldn’t usually have so much choice in a weekend workshop- Rock, Movement, Drama, Gospel, Technique, Songwriting & everything else. Then you’ve got the workshops with David Jaanz and the Guest Stars. Opportunities like these do not come around every day.
What are you most looking forward to at this year’s workshop?
Meeting new people and catching up on the progress of returning students from last year’s workshop.
What pointers would you give anyone coming to this year’s workshop?
Come with an open-mind and an attitude to try everything thrown at you. Get enough sleep between days so that you can be at your best, and then be prepared to be challenged. Some workshops might feel familiar, and then some you won’t have ever expected, and that’s the beauty of Dream Inc. You just never know what might happen! A 2-day workshop could be the beginning of a development deal.
