Marcia Hines

About Marcia Hines:

Look up ‘diva’ in any dictionary and one of the definitions will read something like this: a very successful singer of non-operatic music. A shorthand definition, and far more evocative, consists of two words: Marcia Hines. Marcia is Australia’s original diva with an incredibly successful career, in the often fickle entertainment world, spanning more than 35 years.

In her hometown of Boston, Massachusetts Marcia began singing as a young child and by the age of nine had made her first public appearance in a church choir. After a short stint at Boston’s Conservatorium of Music the lure of performing to a live audience became too strong and, in 1970, Marcia made the fateful decision to audition for the Australian production of Hair.

With a voice that would give a choir of angels a run for their money, Marcia at the age of 16, secured her place in the cast and found herself winging her way to a country that she knew nothing about.

After a successful run in Hair, any thoughts Marcia had of going home were quickly scuppered. Her distinctive style, combined with her natural talent and beauty, ensured there was no danger of the work drying up and home very soon became the land down under.

Marcia’s lists of achievements are extensive and include her role as the world’s first black Mary Magdalene in the Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar, eight multi-platinum albums, eleven Top 10 hits, being crowned Queen of Pop three years running, judge for all seven seasons of Australian Idol, and in 2007 was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. In 2008 Marcia received an AM in the Australia Day Honours for services to the entertainment industry as a performer, judge and mentor, and to the community through a range of charitable organisations.

As well as recording and television commitments, Marcia and her band continue a busy performance schedule throughout Australia and overseas, rewarding old fans, and embracing new ones.

Marcia is as fresh and relevant today as she has ever been and she remains one of Australia’s most loved musical icons. It seems appropriate that Marcia should be involved with Dream Inc. Her experience, empathy and natural musical instinct make her the ideal candidate to nurture the new wave of Australian talent.
